Headboards
A headboard is the cheapest way to change the character of a bedroom, because it changes the one wall that everybody looks at on the way in. The shelf holds upholstered panels in fabric and in velvet, in grey, black and ivory, with button tufting on some models and a plain padded face on others. Two measurements decide the purchase. The width has to match the mattress size rather than the frame size, and the fixing height has to suit the frame it will bolt to, since a headboard mounted too low leaves a gap that pillows fall through. A padded headboard also does quiet practical work: it stops a cold wall from touching the sleeper’s head and it saves the paintwork from wear.

Beds and Bed Frames
The frame shelf is where most of the decisions are made. Christopher Knight beds cover upholstered platform designs, iron frames with a slatted base, and storage models with drawers built into the plinth. A platform bed carries the mattress on slats and needs no separate base, which lowers the total height and suits a room with a low window. A Christopher Knight bed frame with drawers is worth the extra depth in a flat without a wardrobe, since the drawers take bedding that would otherwise need a cupboard. Iron frames give the thinnest profile and the strongest edge, and they make no noise if the bolts are checked once a year. Frames arrive flat in two or three cartons and are bolted together in place, so the room should be clear before the delivery date. A mattress is bought separately, and its size has to match the frame exactly, because one even slightly narrow will drift and expose the slats at one edge.

The shelf that follows the beds holds upholstered storage pieces in fabric, in dark grey, charcoal, beige and light grey. Each one is a padded box with a lifting top, and each one does three jobs at once. It is a seat at the foot of the bed for putting on shoes, a surface for a folded quilt, and a box for the spare bedding that a bedroom rarely has room for. Two measurements settle the choice. The piece should be shorter than the width of the bed so that it does not crowd the walking space on either side, and the top has to open freely, which means leaving clearance in front rather than pushing the bench against the footboard. Storage and bedside surfaces close the room. Nightstands are chosen by height rather than by width: the top should finish level with the mattress or a little above it, so that a glass of water and a lamp are within reach from lying down. Putting the room together
A bedroom reads as finished when the pieces agree on two things: the wood tone and the height line. Matching every item is unnecessary and usually looks flat, but keeping the timber within one family, warm or cool, does most of the work. The height line is the second half: headboard high, dresser at chest height, nightstands at mattress height, and nothing else tall enough to break the eye’s path around the walls. Colour beyond that comes from bedding and a rug, which cost little and can be changed in an afternoon when the room begins to feel stale.
